Lukas Xagas: who Radius was before he was Radius
A hukeira instructor, a leader among the Tapanhumas and the author of a solo mission that went wrong. Meet the man behind the mask.
The Radius Universe Archive holds a curiosity: the hero has two files. The first is Radius. The second, marked as civilian identity, is Lukas Xagas. It is the same person, told in two moments.
The instructor
Before everything, Lukas was one of the leading members of the Tapanhumas and an instructor of hukeira, the martial art that joins the strikes and rhythms of capoeira with the holds of huka-huka, an indigenous fight from the Upper Xingu. He learned it straight from its creators, Mestre and Ci-Jaci.
Hukeira was kept secret for centuries. Lukas was one of the few allowed to teach it, in secrecy, to the sons and daughters of the resistance. The file says the hope of spreading the fight rested on him.
The solo mission
Months before the resistance regrouped in Aruanda, Lukas left on his own to sabotage the Great Hologram Central of Marília Metropolitana. He did not tell the rest of the Tapanhumas. He never came back from that mission.
Captured by Major Pimã's forces, he was taken as a test subject to Quark Labs and put through the R.A.D.I.U.S. project, run by Dr. Otium. The file is direct: the Lukas the resistance knew ceased to exist in that form.
What came back instead
Lukas survived the transformation with the ability to emit blasts of energy. What looks like a suit is not fabric. It is a skin of black energy, with amber outlines and aura, including the mask that covers his whole face.
It was Dr. Otium himself who helped him escape through the tunnels of the abandoned subway back to Aruanda. He was also the one who suggested a codename, since Lukas would depend on the energy suit indefinitely. Radius was born.
The secret
Until the end of Volume 1, no one in the resistance knows that Radius is Lukas Xagas. Ci-Jaci is still waiting for the friend who disappeared to come back. Among his allies, he answers to another name: "Spark", the nickname Pituco insists on using.
