Spark, Fleabag and Chimney: where the names and nicknames of the Radius universe come from

A codename born in a lab, a nickname given mid-escape and a name inherited from a falcon: the origin of what each character is called in 3121.

In the year 3121, almost nobody goes by their given name alone. There are code names that came from a lab, nicknames given inside the Kennel, and a name inherited from a bird. Here is what the official files say about each one.

Radius: a name that came out of the lab

The hero's name comes from the scientific project that transformed him. R.A.D.I.U.S. is the acronym, in Portuguese, for Radiação Atômica Disruptiva Intra Ultra Supramolecular. According to the Radius dossier, it was Dr. Otium himself who suggested the codename, at the moment of the escape back to Aruanda, when it became clear that Lukas Xagas would depend on the energy suit indefinitely.

Spark and Fleabag

Among his allies, though, Radius goes by another name. Pituco insists on calling him “Spark”, and he is the only one who does. The favor is returned in kind: Radius calls the dog “Fleabag”. The Pituco file even lists the nickname in the codename field.

Chimney and Shorty

Pituco's habit of renaming everyone carries on in the Kennel, Major Pimã's slave-fighting arena. That is where he crosses paths with Jack and starts calling him “Chimney”. Jack fires back with “Shorty”.

Peregrino: named after a falcon

Peregrino owes his name to Ci-Jaci, his adoptive mother. She named him after the peregrine falcon, described in the file as the fastest bird that ever existed in Brazilian fauna, which she knew through her ancient knowledge. Ci-Jaci herself has a short form: she is also called Ci. As for Mestre, that is simply how everyone addresses him.

On the regime's side

  • Plural: the result of the fusion of two beings, he has no single identity and always speaks in the plural. The codename is a direct reference to the pair that gave rise to him.
  • Dr. Otium: “otium” comes from Latin and means rest or free time, an ironic contrast for a scientist who never rests from the regime's experiments.
  • Major Pimã: the Kennel's own prisoners know him as “Sádico Pimã” (Sadistic Pimã).
  • Millennium: she is announced by the Kennel's arena host as “The Devourer”.
  • Limbo: known for his “hi hi hi” laugh, he is called a “worm” by Major Pimã, even when he brings good news.

The dictator, by the way, has a name for the entire resistance: “parasites”, as recorded on the Tomorrow Troops page.
